There is a multitude of individuals and companies purporting to be “Home Theater experts.”  As a consumer, you are faced with the daunting task of not only finding a company or store you feel comfortable with, but choosing one with the knowledge and integrity to provide you with first quality equipment and design services. 

Platinum Home Theaters was born from the consumer experience.  Founder Jim Addie has “played” the home theater game as a potential customer, by walking into major electronics stores, and finding the answers he got to simple questions were not only misleading, but often completely wrong!  Misinformation, sadly, is abundant!  When faced with the dizzying array of equipment, disinterested and uneducated sales people, and pressure to buy because the “sale ends today,” Jim recognized that the retail store experience is in direct opposition to the process of making intelligent and informed decisions.  Even with his background of decades of experience at the cutting edge of media technology, Jim found the retail electronics stores daunting, and completely frustrating. 

Realizing his unique position of having the technical expertise to filter out the hype, and recognizing what’s truly important, Jim began to explore the possibility of starting a home theater company with a difference:  unsurpassed Personalized Service.  He believed he could turn the home theater experience around and make it really work for the consumer--rather than the superstores who merely focus on selling equipment with little to no regard for the end result.

The culmination of his experiences, and expertise, is Platinum Home Theaters.  What makes Platinum unique is we avoid the retail environment completely, and focus on YOU.  Rather than have our customers face a wall of TVs, or a mountain of speakers, we come to your home, meet with you in your future home theater space.  We conduct an interview with you--designed to help us thoroughly understand your desires and needs. 

We then prepare our recommendations, and work with you to design the home theater of your dreams--be it a multi-purpose entertainment room, or a dedicated home theater.  Jim has designed countless professional studios and media rooms, and has worked for many prestigious clients. He knows that your space is 50% of the equation, and he knows how to make the most of a space.  He understands the science of sound,  sightlines, and acoustics, and he puts all that knowledge to work for you, making your space the best it can be. Working with Platinum is working with an expert consultant and project manager who provides everything necessary  to get your home theater project done right.

Highly regarded in the Chicago area as an audio engineer of supreme integrity and unmatched qualifications, Jim has always been at the cutting edge of technology in audio, having designed and built custom audiophile equipment.  He brings over 30 years of audio engineering expertise to your project.  He worked for premiere Classical FM station WFMT for 15 years, served as  chairman of the Hancock FM Committee, has been consultant to renowned clients such as Museum of Science and Industry, John G. Shedd Aquarium, the Chicago Tribune and film director John Hughes.  Jim is also a video producer and has produced several full length special-interest documentaries and programs for clients such as The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and SBC.  He is an excellent communicator and experienced public speaker.  Jim has also been a longtime friend with THX creator, Tomlinson Holman.  Mr. Holman is the ‘Father of Surround Sound’ and worked for George Lucas’ Lucasfilm, designing and setting sound standards which are still used in film soundtracks, and THX Theaters today.  (THX stands for Tom Holman Experiment)

Jim Addie’s longtime association with consultant partner, Tom Holman, makes Platinum Home Theaters really unique.  Mr. Holman is renowned in the industry for his decades of research in the audio field, and our Platinum Families benefit from this very special association.  We are able to design THX, and now TMH Home Theaters for the most discriminating clients.  We are the only TMH Qualified Technicians in the country.  (TMH reflects Mr. Holman’s full initials, and ten further years of his research).
